I worked hard on this! Also, those of you familiar with Transcontinental, perk your ears! A lot of things from here are directly copy/pasted into the RP :3
The Touhou series of games are a number of curtain-fire shoot 'em ups, kinda like R-Type or Galaga/Galaxian/Phoenix for ION, except with absolutely crazy numbers of bullets. It's great fun, and all the games can be downloaded from doujinstyle.com
But! That's not what I'm driving at. The fun thing about Touhou is that the fanbase is very, very well developed. The games themselves put a lot more emphasis on the characters and the relationships they share with each other, rather than the (very beautiful) danmaku (curtain-fire) action. This has led to ungodly amounts of doujinshi, a lot of which is very, very good.
So! With the intent of turning more people onto Touhou, I present to you a rather nice doujin comic (courtesy of another) from Gensokyo.org, called "Wriggle vs SDM." This is one of Tohifun's (the name of the doujinshi circle) "battle mangas," or rather, something in the spirit of shojo anime.
As for this one, the best I can think of to describe it is the Soul Society raid from Bleach, except with a lot less dialogue and a lot more kicking of the ass. A lot more.
Of course, those unfamiliar with the series may find themselves somewhat confused as to who's who, and what's going on, SO below the following link, I will write a nice little summary of all the characters the general setting.
Without further ado, here it is. Use the right arrow to move from page to page, reads right to left, top to bottom!
Okayo! Those of you who are unaware, listen up! The first thing I need to lay down are the characters, so here goes! Names are in the American style, first then last.
Reimu Hakurei: The shrine maiden, or miko, in the comic. She's at the bottom of the far right on page 2, with the kinda funny sleeves open at the shoulders, and a little mikostick. She can fly, is the protagonist of the games, and is charged with guarding the Hakurei Shine, the border between the human world and Gensokyo*.
Yukari Yakumo: A youkai, or powerful non-human entity, which can range from anything including demons to fairies. She is older than dirt, and has the power to manipulate borders -- think of her as in control of a souped-up Aperture Science Portal Device. This lets her create "gaps," which let her warp things from one place to another instantly by joining their borders, among other things. She has a familiar named Ran, a kitsune, and Ran has a familiar of her own, named Chen. She's a cat... thing. She is at upper right of the panel containing Reimu. She's very well connected among the residents of Gensokyo, especially with important people.
Marisa Kirisame: She's a witch! A very powerful one at that, and a cat burglar as well - she regularly steals things from... well, everywhere. She's recognizable by her witch hat and broom, and is at the top of the second panel from the right. She's very boisterous, and rather violent at times. Her trademark spell is "Master Spark," a Hadoken type blast of death fired from the hands. It hurts. Alot :3
Alice Margatroid: Right below Marisa. Alice and Marisa share a kind of love/hate relationship - they're friends but fight horribly often. Alice is a doll master, and fights almost solely through her dolls, the most prominent of them being Shanghai, which I believe makes a few appearances shooting lasers and such.
Sakuya Izayoi: Is at the top of the third panel from the right, in the maid outfit. She's a little bit of an enigma, and is the head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion*. She has the power to control time and space, and is a master of knives. She takes full advantage of that by creating pocket dimensions to hold insane numbers of knives in (you shall see), and stopping time once she has thrown them all to pick them up again. Being the head maid, she has a retinue of maids at the SDM itself to boss around.
Remilia Scarlet: The mistress of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she is a vampire, and very cute x3 She's right underneath Sakuya in the third from the right. Remilia can be rather playful at times, and pretty good-natured, but is also immensely powerful - her signature weapon, "Spear the Gungir," is... well, Gungir -- a big, flaming, red spear of death and doom.
Youmu Konpaku: The Saiyouji's gardener, and resident swordmaster. She is a half-ghost (there's a big white blob around her, that's her ghost half x3), and fights using two swords - you can see them on her in the last panel on the left, at top. Youmu is a pretty serious person, unlike her mistress, but has the firepower to back it up.
Yuyuko Saiyouji: The one at bottom, below Youmu, and the princess of some-place or another whose name I'm too lazy to look up. She's dead, btw. She is usually pretty airheaded and good-natured, kinda like a bit of cotton candy on the wind. Most of this, however, is a charade that hides the fact that she has the ability to kill anything she likes at will. Usually she uses butterflies for this end (you'll see).
Hong Meirin: Also known as China, because of her clothes and Mao hat. She is the gatekeeper for the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and fights with Chinese martial arts - that is, rainbows and flying kicks. Pretty easy to recognize, she crops up early. More of a joke character than anything else, but she has her moments.
Flandre Scarlet: Flandre is really cute. She's Remilia's little sister, and she often fights with her older sister... just as they tend to do. She, however, has ungodly power - her ability is to invoke destruction in anything she desires, and her weapon is Lavaetin, the weapon used to burn down the world at Ragnarok. She's prone to a few mood swings now and then, but is generally loyal to her friends and most unsettlingly nasty to her foes. She's distinguishable from her sister by her wings, which are not bat wings, but rather kinda metal/crystal constructs.
Patchouli Knowledge: The Scarlet Devil Mansion's librarian and shut in. She likes her library, and her books, and has huge magical power, but she's asthmatic, so she can't really use it. She has a few signature attacks, but the most powerful of them is the "Royal Flare," which is a huge fireball that... well, pretty much owns everything. She has a familiar named Koakuma, who's a rather funny little imp (the one with the floating bat wings around her head, you see her with Patchy). Patchouli herself can be distinguished by her nightcap with crescent moon, and gown with ribbons.
Suika Ibiki: Not important. She shows up a couple times, and she has a spell that makes her turn into a giantloli. Not important!
Now, the antagonist:
Wriggle Nightbug: A poor little thing, who got rather badly beaten at the start of one of the Touhou games, and since then has been plotting revenge. She has the power to control insects, and is generally overlooked as a weak character - she's the boss of level 1. But Wriggle may have some hidden depths...
Concepts
The biggest concept here is the Spell Card system, which is kinda analogous to Super Special Awesome attacks from videogames/fighters. Within each card (which is named), is contained the power of a certain spell or essence, which when called, allows the user to pull forth an attack of great power. They are user-specific, however, and generally you only see people using one at a time, and even then at great intervals: notice that Patch and Youmu each only ever use two, which is a lot. Of course, sometimes when things get really out of whack, you see people throwing out two or even three in rapid succession... I've seen one instance of someone using five in the space of a few seconds, which is absolutely unheard of.
They are usually used in a certain order - for example, Alice's first card she normally uses is "Artful Sacrifice," while her second (or third, maybe) is "Hourai Doll." The characters aren't bound to go in order, but that's generally what you see.
The setting of "Wriggle vs SDM" is the Scarlet Devil Mansion, set in Gensokyo, or the "spirit world." Gensokyo borders our world, and the crossing point is the Hakurei Shrine. The Scarlet Devil Mansion is the home of Remilia and company (Sakuya, Patchouli, Flandre, and China/Hong Meirin).
That should be all~ :3 Enjoy!
