Star Ocean: Till the End of Time
Star ocean: Till the End of Time is the third game in the star ocean series, this time for the playstation 2. Developed by Tri-ace, it was published in Japan by Enix, shortly before in merged with Square. When released in North America, it was automatically the directors cut, allowing more playable characters and other stuffs. The game takes place 400 years after the first two star oceans.
Story:
The Star Ocean Series takes place in a very star trek like era, in earth time. That being said, a very large part of all the games take place on underdeveloped planets, or planets that haven’t developed space travel, and don’t know about other people on other planets. Mostly, these places are in medieval like times.
The main part of the story follows Fayt Leingod, a normal, video game loving kid. After a vacation on the planet Hyda IV goes wrong, he is forced to flew from the attacking Vendeen Empire (attacking for an unknown reason). While escaping onto a starship, Fayt's parents stay behind to hold off the enemy. Soon the starship is also attacked, and he is separated from a life friend, Sophia Esteed. In his escape pod, he crash lands on an unidentified, underdeveloped planet. Not long after, he meets the man Cliff Fitter, also from another planed. Cliff offers to take Fayt with him, indicating his boss wants the meet with him for an unknown reason.
And I’ll stop there (the story gets much more in-depth, but i don't want to spoil things.).
Gameplay:
SO3 has a gameplay system very similar to Tales Of Symphonia, in the way you run around in battles. In SO3, as opposed to being on a line with the enemy, as in TOS, you are free to run around the whole battlefield. In battles, only three people at a time can participate, and it’s only single player (Expcetion of 2 player VS. mode when you get a special artifact).
The main difference in battles is the fact that if your HP OR MP is depleted, you will die. Likewise, attacks can damage enemies HP or MP, as they can be killed by either also. This can be a great advantage, as many bosses are high in HP and low in MP. Attack skills use up your HP instead of MP, though Symbology/Runeology uses MP like normal. Symbology, or Runeology, depending on what planet you are on, are just words for magic in the Star Ocean Game. Basically it is the act of using Symbols/runes to invoke magical power.
A very in-depth, and possibly time consuming, aspect of the game is item creation and invention. By going to workshops, you can start an item editing, or an item inventing, in many fields such as writing, alchemy, smiting, and others. Also, scattered around the game are inventors, which, after meeting certain requirements, can be hired and used in the invention process.
Another aspect of the game is collecting battle trophies. When on normal, or any mode higher than that, you can collect battle trophies. Battle trophies are awarded for achieving certain feats in battle, some easy, some extremely difficult. By doing this, you can unlock things like bonus costums or higher gameplay dificulties.
Characters
Fayt Leingod: Fayt is 19 year-old, video game loving, and human. Fayt is the main character of Star Ocean 3. Due to much simulation video game playing, he has become very skilled with a sword. He also dabbles in the art of Symbology.
Sophia Esteed: Sophia is a 17 year old human, like Fayt. She has grown up with him since childhood. Sophia is exceptional at Symbology, and is the character with the most Symbology in the whole game. She carries a weak staff for melee attacks.
Cliff Fitter: Cliff is 36 years old, and of the Klausian Race. Cliff is the founder and former leader of the anti-federation group Quark. At the beginning of the game, he and Fayt take on partner type roles with each other, which fades as the game progresses. Cliff fights on the front lines, using only his fists.
Maria Traydor: Maria is a 19 year old, earth-born human. Maria was orphaned as a child, and soon found by Cliff and Quark. Later, as Quarks battle ship was being attacked, she proved her worth by saving the day. Maria fights from long distances with a laser gun, but can also hold her own with kicks on the front line.
Nel Zelpher: Nel is a 23-year-old, ninja like agent for kingdom of Aquios on Elicoor II, where she was born. Early in the game, She rescues Cliff and Fayt from prison, and takes them to her kingdom. Nel fights with twin daggers and runeology.
Albel Nox: “Albel the wicked” Nox is a 24 year old native of Elicoor II. Specializing in one-on-one combat, he leads Airyglyph’s “Black Brigade.” Though starting the game an enemy, and fighting the party a few times, Albel eventually gets won over. Albel, even after joining the party, is very much hated by everyone. Albel fights with a katana and a clawed gauntlet.
Roger S. Huxley: Roger is a Menodix, a very short race of humanoids from Elicoor II. Obsessed with being a “real man”, Roger fights with an axe.
Peppita Rossetti: Peppita is a 14 year old Velbaysian. Being a performer, she doesn’t have conventional weapons, and fights with her shoes and bangles.
Mirage Koas: Mirage Koas is the Klausian daughter a dojo-master. He role in the game as a fighter is almost completely identical to Cliffs, as they spar together often.
Adray Lasbard: Adray is a 58 year old devoted follower of the kingdom of Aquios. Though he has a katana, he rarely takes it out of its sheath, and instead uses runeology.
Overall
Overall, I give this game a 9.5/10.
